Coal wagons are filled with real coal to provide a realistic effect (of course).

Duncan Bell brought along his novel 0-4-2 tank loco. It is based on a standard 0-4-0, with cylinders removed and coal bunker added. 

Dixon Upcott had a Mallard on display with a 'glowing firebox'.
The test bed also showed off the can motor.

Peek in the cab and you can see the firebox glowing.
